2014 Recipient of the John Philip Sousa Foundation Sudler Silver Cup
Rice Middle School, part of the Plano Independent School District in Plano, Texas, is a CCC campus of approximately 1150 students. Opening in 1999 to accommodate a then rapidly growing school district, Rice has grown to represent a very diverse population of students with very high expectations of academic performance and citizenship.
Approximately 950 students participate in the school's music program each year, of which roughly 425 are enrolled in the band program. The orchestra and choir programs at Rice are also robust and highly successful.
Band is a curricular course with certain extracurricular components. Band classes at Rice Middle School meet daily for approximately 50 minutes. Beginning Band classes meet in like-instrument groups focusing on fundamental performance techniques. Beginning classes offered include:
Oboe and Bassoon
Euphonium and Tuba
Students with a year or more of playing experience will be grouped into one of four fully instrumented bands:
Wind Ensemble is our varsity band
Symphonic Band is our nonvarsity band
Concert Maroon and Concert Navy are our subnonvarsity bands
Supplemental instruction through private lessons is available for all students from a highly-qualified team of independently contracted expert private teachers.
All four bands participate in University Interscholastic League Concert and Music Reading (Sightreading) Contest each year. In addition, all students are eligible and encouraged to participate in All-Region and Solo and Ensemble events. Our philosophical mission is to provide every student with a positive, challenging, and relevant musical experience regardless of his or her level of proficiency.
The Rice Raven Band has earned a reputation as an outstanding middle school band program within the State of Texas and nationally.
